Puncknowle Manor
Estate
Arable and Dairy Farm
Puncknowle Manor Estate farms 730
hectares (1800 acres) through the Bride Valley in South West Dorset. The main
enterprise on the estate is the Pedigree herd of Holstein Friesians.
This herd has 360 adult cattle,
milking about 300 cows every day of the year. The cows are milked twice a day
and we sell about 8000 litres of fresh whole milk everyday. This amounts to
nearly 3 million litres every year. The cows are fed a total mixed ration which
includes Grass, Grass Silage, Maize silage, Soya, Rapeseed, and rolled wheat.
The herd breeds its own
youngstock which are housed at Berwick Farm. All the Pedigree Holstein Friesian
calves are kept to come into the milking herd at about 30 months of age.
Feeding the calves can be organised upon request.
The herd is based just out of the
village at Hazel Lane Dairy. Some of the old dairy buildings are still in the
main yard in the village, where they used to milk cows about 15 years ago. Also
of interest is the old outdoor milking bail, looking up towards the Knoll. This
is where the cows used to be milked in the summer. .
The estate grows all its own
grass and maize for silage. This is all harvested by the estate's own staff and
machinery. They also grow Wheat, Barley and Oilseed Rape.
The farm is covered in public
bridal and footpaths enabling you to enjoy and explore the beauty of the Dorset
Countryside. Included on the farm on the top of a knoll is the old coastguard
cottage with breathtaking views from Portland and Weymouth to Paignton in
Devon.
The estate also runs a successful
pheasant and partridge shoot, managed by the estates gamekeeper. There are also
large areas of woodland, and conservation areas to encourage the natural
wildlife including badgers, foxes, pheasants, wild deer and flora.
The estate is owned by Jim and
Sarah Wild who live in the Village Manor house with their three children.
